AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Athens powerlifters finish fifth at regionals

RUSK — The Athens Hornets powerlifting team finished fifth among 26 teams at the regional meet held on Thursday.

The Hornets finished with 13 points behind Texarkana Liberty-Eylau, who won the meet with 30 points.

Center was second with 24 points, Emory Rains placed third with 20 points and Quinlan Ford was fourth with 16 points.

Athens lifter Jose Rodriguez placed first in the 123-pound weight class. Rodriguez had a total weight of 975 pounds.  

With the win, he advanced to state for the second time.

Ricardo Rodriguez placed fifth in the 114-pound class with a total of 735 pounds lifted. He made the regional round all four years of high school.

Brian Gutierrez placed eighth in the 275-pound class with a total weight of 1,235 pounds.

John Arellano placed second in the Super heavyweight class with a total of 1,480 pounds.

This will be Arellano’s first trip to the state meet.

The Hornets will compete at the state meet at the  Expo Center in Abilene on Saturday, March 23rd.

BHS run rules Eustace 11-1 at Kemp tourney

KEMP — Coach Ryan Scott’s Brownsboro Bears took care of business in the opening round of the Kemp Tournament in an 11-1 win over Eustace in five innings.

Brownsboro scored five runs in the fifth on an RBI single by Shelby Rogers, an RBI single by Blake Ralson, and a two-run double by Raul Gutierrez.

Ralson got a hit in each of his three at bats.

Chris Davis got the win with nine strikeouts.

Davis allowed one earned run on four hits and no walks over five innings.

Ralson went 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored.

CRHS softball 1-2 at Hawkins tourney

HAWKINS — The Cross Roads Lady Cats opened the Hawkins tournament with a 1-2 record.

The Lady Cats lost a close won to big sandy 3-0, but put together a three-run fourth inning to defeat Winona 3-1 in pool play.

The lady Cats finished pool play by losing to Hawkins to finish the day.

“We really have improved and we keep seeing positive things from this young team,” Cross Roads coach Steve Tardiff said. “I am very pleased with our effort today. The lady cats will play again in hawkins this Saturday.

AHS soccer games set for Spring Break

The Athens High School soccer teams will be in action during Spring Break.

Coach Jonathan Ryal’s Hornets’ will be in action hosting Whitehouse on Tuesday night.

Game times at set for 5:30 p.m. for the junior varsity and the varsity game is set for 7 p.m.

The Lady Hornets will be on the road at Whitehouse for District 31-4A action.

Game time for the varsity game is set for 7 p.m.

Both teams wrap up the regular season the following week.

Kourtney Holyfield receives honors

Kourtney Holyfield was recently selected to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-Region team.

Holyfield was also named to the Texas Girl’s Coaches Association All-State and was named for their all-star team.

She will play on the red team July 12th at 11 a.m. in Austin.

Schedule change for TVCC-Navarro softball

The TVCC-Navarro softball doubleheader scheduled in Athens at Cain Park on Thursday, March 14 has been rescheduled.

The game will now be played Wednesday, March 13 at 1 and 3 p.m., according to TVCC softball coach Ashley Johnston.
