TERRELL —
The Eustace Lady Bulldogs seemed like they were halfway to the regional tournament in Rockwall.
Turns out they were halfway to a heartbreak.
The Lady Bulldogs (30-9) saw their season end at the hands of the Commerce Lady Tigers, 3-2, Tuesday night at Terrell High School. The Lady Bulldogs were ahead, 2-0, before watching the Lady Tigers rally to win three straight to clinch the match.
Eustace won the first two games, 26-24 and 25-18, with Commerce (28-7) completing its comeback with scores of 25-13; 29-27; and 15-13. With the victory, the Lady Tigers advance to the Class 2A Region II final four, facing either Gunter or Pilot Point in the regional semifinals Friday at Rockwall Heath High School.
Eustace head coach Chuck Powers saw his team’s season end in the quarterfinals for the fourth time in five seasons.
The Lady Bulldogs were strong at the net all night long, getting huge kills from seniors Kacie Richards, Bethany Strickland and Casey Bramblitt.
The match was the final one for eight Eustace seniors — who never missed the playoffs. The other seniors are Chelsea Oldham; Mallory Keeling; Dominique Kelley; Sheyenne Merrell; and Ella Agold.
Eustace was making its 11th consecutive trip to the UIL state volleyball playoffs.
