The Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals' historic season came to a crashing halt Friday afternoon in an elimination contest at the Region XIV Volleyball Tournament at Lee College.
The Lady Cardinals, making their first appearance in the event in the three-year history of the school's program, dropped a 3-1 decision to the Panola College Fillies, ending their season at 18-12.
For a moment, it appeared the Lady Cardinals were going to send the match to a fifth set. Coach Tosha Spain's squad, which had won the second set 25-22, raced out to a 16-8 lead in Game 4. Behind the hard-hitting and net play of Jazmine Hicks and Kaitlyn McShan, the Lady Cardinals were in control -- or so it appeared.
Haley Hampton brought Panola back with her net prowess and former Brownsboro High School standout Hillary Shaffer turned the tide. Shaffer scored five straight times from the service line to put the Fillies into a 23-20 lead. Sara Cruz followed with a kill for the Lady Cardinals, but they would get no closer and Panolo sealed the deal.
Panola was a 25-14 winner in Game 1.
In the second game. Paulla Pinheiro and McShan led the way for the Lady Cardinals. Both had an ace serve and Pinheiro had two kills to go along with one by Hicks.
Pinheiro, McShan and Hicks were even more active in Game 3, but it was to no avail. Panola came out with 25-15 decision.
Game 4 featured long rallies and acrobatic saves by both teams and took 22 minutes to play, ending when a would-be Pinheiro kill sailed just out of bounds.
