BRETT HOFFMAN: Koontz , Hanson rope up Ft. Worth Stock show rodeo title

FORT WORTH — When the title was at stake at the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo, Kory Koontz of Sudan and his partner Brock Hanson knew they were in for a big challenge.

They learned they had drawn a difficult steer, an animal that had a reputation for stopping immediately after the head catch had been made.

But they also realized they had some wiggle room.

They entered the finals with a commanding lead with a two-run time of 9.6, 1.1 seconds ahead of their nearest competitor.

Though they turned in a so-so time of 6.5 during the final round, Koontz and Hanson clinched the title with a three-run time of 16.1, nine tenths of a second ahead of second place finishers Brooks Dahozy of Window Rock, Ariz., and Jayton McCright of Canyon.

“It was like a football game, knowing we had a great lead going into the fourth quarter,” Koontz said. “We just had to maintain it. We knew the main thing that we had to do was just make a clean run.”

Koontz, a 19-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier, clinched his second consecutive title at the Fort Worth rodeo on Feb 9.

Last year, he finished No. 1 with the help of partner Erich Rogers.

Other 2013 Fort Worth Stock Show champions crowned were: Kaycee Feild, bareback riding; Cody Wright, saddle bronc riding; Straws Milan, steer wrestling; Friday Wright II, bull riding; Taylor Jacob, Carmine, barrel racing; and Randall Carlisle, College Station, tie-down roping.

After winning the title in Fort Worth, Koontz, and Hanson, who lives in Casa Grande, Ariz., each earned $8,028.

After all that, Koontz is ranked No. 1 in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association team roping heeling world title race with 2013 regular season earnings of $16,788.

Other 2012 Fort Worth Stock Show champions crowned were: Kaycee Feild, bareback riding; Cody Wright, saddle bronc riding; Straws Milan, steer wrestling; Friday Wright II, bull riding; Taylor Jacob, Carmine, barrel racing; and Randall Carisle, College Station, tie-down roping.

Jacob, a Texas A&M communications major who lives in Carmine, earned $14,796, and finished as the 17-day rodeo's highest money winner.

Koontz also is entered in the Feb. 14-17 & 20-23 San Angelo Stock Show Rodeo and the Feb. 7-24 San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo.
