THE COLONY —
The Athens High School Swimming and Diving Team competed in the Region 4-4A Regional Championships on February 15-16th.
The team finished seventh out of 19 teams teams in the region, with the girls' team finishing fifth out of 17 teams while the boys placed 10 out of 12 teams.
“This was our first year in this new Region and the swimmers stepped up and competed exactly how they were supposed to,” Athens coach Caroline Maxvill said.
“They placed themselves well for next year and in my opinion and shocked a few teams from 4A schools who have two-to-three-times as many athletes.”
In the girls' individual events, Allison Hardin finished sixth in the 100 and 200 freestyle, while Paula Contois finished seventh in the 50 freestyle and ninth in the 100 breaststroke.
In the diving events, Avery Weinstein finished second in the one meter diving, while teammate Brianna Jackson finished fourth in the one meter event.
In the relay events, the team of Mary Cheadle, Contois, Hardin and Weinstein finished sixth in the 200 medley relay, and finished fixth in the 200 freestyle relay.
“We had an outstanding showing from our freshmen as Avery Weinstein advanced to state by finishing second in one meter diving,” Maxvill said. “Brianna Jackson scored critical points in diving, and Allison Hardin finaled in both of her individual events (200 and 100 freestyle).”
In the boys events, Alex Garner finished in 13th place in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. Teammates Nathan Garner finished 15th in the 100 breaststroke, while Henry Lebeau finished 13th in the 50 freestyle and 14th in the 100 breaststroke.
“All of our Boys earned second swims in consolation heats and garnered lifetime best times in their events,” Maxvill said.
Weinstein will compete February 22-23 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Swim Center at the University of Texas at Austin to wrap up the season.
