JUNIOR COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Fitting dedication

TVCC sweeps TJC in Region XIV contest, heads to Kilgore Wednesday

ATHENS — On a day when Leon Spencer received his dedication at the basketball court that now bears his name, the TVCC Cardinals capped off a sweep of the Tyler Junior College Apaches Saturday night.

TVCC (16-9, 7-7) jumped out to a 33-21 lead at the half, and had to hold on in the second half for a 64-57 victory over the Apaches.

Coach Kris Baumann’s Cardinals were in complete control of the game leading by double figures throughout most of the game until TJC put together a rally to get to within three points late in the game.

TJC’s Todd Eaglin drained a three-pointer to cut the Cardinals lead to, 60-57, with 39 seconds remaining before Karon Phillips nailed four clutch free throws to ice the game.

TVCC was led in scoring by Tyler Corley with 17 points, draining five three-pointers in the game.

Teammates Carl Porter and Tramain Parker scored nine points each in the win. Porter had five of the Cardinals nine three-pointers in the contest.

Tyler was led in scoring by DeAndre Harris with 17 points.

TVCC travels to Kilgore Wednesday night with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.

Women

TVCC 80, TJC 45

The No. 2-ranked Lady Cardinals won their 41st straight home game Saturday afternoon on Leon Spencer Court sealing the win in the first half by taking a 40-17 lead into the locker room.

During that stretch, the Lady Cards have won by an average of 29.9 points per game.

Tyler (10-14, 3-8 in Region XIV play) trailed 18-13 with 5:45 remaining in the half following a basket by Tyler’s Shernise Robinson. Robinson and teammate Bria Emanuel scored 13 points each to lead the Lady Apaches.

Trinity Valley (24-1, 10-0) then went on an 11-0 run on back-to-back steals and layups by Savannah Carter and Victoria Wells as their full court pressure paid dividends during that stretch.

Five TVCC players scored in double figures, led by Shannon Smith with 20 points. Teammates Adut Bulgak scored 18, Roddricka Patton had 13 and Wells and Carter scored 11 points each in the win.

TVCC travels to Kilgore Wednesday night to face the Lady Rangers. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
