Athens —
The Athens Lady Hornets opened up the Lady Hornet Cup Tournament with a 1-1 finish at Bruce Field.
Coach Dedra Jackson’s squad (3-2) lost their final game on Thursday afternoon 4-1 to the Corsicana Lady Tigers.
The Lady Hornets came out of the gate aggressive and took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Brielle Patton past a diving Elida Hinojosa at the 18:50 mark of the opening half.
Corsicana forward Makenzi Taylor then went to work scoring a hat trick as her first goal came off a corner kick with one minute remaining for the equalizer at 1-1.
Taylor then opened up the scoring in the second half off a deflection for the 2-1 lead.
Corsicana spent most of the second half of the game in Lady Hornets territory as AHS was unable to get any momentum headed their way.
Following a run inside the Lady Hornets penalty box, Taylor scored her final goal of the game on a penalty kick.
Elizabeth Castaneda capped off the scoring for the Lady Tigers with a blast at the 14 minute mark to seal up the win at 4-1.
Athens will return to the Bruce Field pitch Friday morning with a 8:30 a.m. match against the Kaufman Lady Lions.
They will then wrap up pool play action against Lufkin Hudson at 2:45 p.m.
In their opening game of the tournament, AHS scored a 2-1 victory over Palestine.
Myranda Baumgartner and Gabby Lawyer scored the goals for the Lady Hornets.
