PORT ARTHUR —
The Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals’ fall from first place was a brief one.
The Cardinals got 19 points from Will Bond and 18 from Daniel Ehambe in a 74-68 win over the South Zone leading Lamar State-Port Arthur Seahawks Saturday.
The huge road win, combined with Paris’ 65-59 loss to San Jacinto, put the Cardinals back on top in the Region XIV Conference North Zone standings by a half game.
TVCC will enter Wednesday’s home game against Blinn with an 8-3 record in conference (15-7 overall). Paris sits at 7-3.
“We beat a really good team here,” TVCC head coach Pat Smith told The Port Arthur News. “Lamar State is the best team we’ve played.”
TVCC trailed in the game by margins of 16-5, 29-14 and 41-32. The Cardinals also trailed at the half, 35-25.
But Smith’s club rallied back in the second half, scoring nearly twice as many points (49) as it did in the first half. TVCC accomplished that feat despite an off game for guard D.D. Scarver, the conference’s leading scorer who was held to just 10 points.
The Cardinals took the lead for good with 5:29 left in the game on a shot by Billy Johnson. Johnson finished with 11 points for TVCC. Devon Agusi netted four points and Dominique Elliot finished with two.
In addition to Ehambe’s four three-pointers, Bond hit two from long range and Johnson found the bottom of the net on one.
Lamar State-Port Arthur was led in scoring by Elijah Pittman, who finished with 19 points.
The Cardinals will tip off against Blinn at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Their game will follow the No. 1-ranked Lady Cardinals, who get a quick rematch against Blinn in a 5:30 p.m. start at Cardinal Gym. The Lady Cards narrowly avoided an upset last week in Brenham, scoring a 64-61 victory.
