The Athens Review

ATHENS — The East Texas Fishing Report for the week of Aug. 30:

ATHENS — Lake Athens is eight inches low and fairly clear. Water temp is in upper 80s.

Bass anglers are picking up some solid slot fish on light Texas rigs, Senkos and topwaters fished around shallow vegetation, mainly early, late and at night. Boat houses doctored with brush also are holding some quality bass. Out deeper, try dragging a Carolina rig or drop shot around drop offs with brush in 12-20 feet of water. Some schooling activity reported on the main lake.

Crappie are fair on live shiners fished vertical around main lake brush piles in 18-20 feet of water. Bream are good on crickets and night crawlers fished around boat docks.

CEDAR CREEK — The lake is 16 inches low and slightly stained. Water temp is in the upper 80s.

White bass are good on slabs bounced off main lake humps in 10-12 feet. Catfish are taking cut bait soaked on bottom on humps in 18-24 feet of water.

Fishing guide Gary Paris says bass fishing has been excellent in 20-22 feet of water during midday, then moving to 10-12 feet around grass later in the afternoon. Paris said the shallow bite is best on Texas rig redbug, bluefleck and watermelon pattern worms. Lots of fish under 16 inches in the mix.
