TVCC takes care of Galveston, 5-2, in opening round action

CORSICANA — The Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals put together a total team effort Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the Region XIV softball tournament at Navarro College.

That effort gave the Lady Cardinals a, 5-2, win over the No. 1 South seed Galveston College Whitecaps at Lou and Jesse Cumming field.

“We played with a lot of heart  today,” Johnston said. “I told the kids that athletic ability was not going to win this game today but heart would.”

With the win, coach Ashley Johnston’s team is now 31-23 on the season with a match up against Blinn today at 5:30 p.m.

“They needed this win and I think this one win is going to carry them,” Johnston said. “I think they will come in tomorrow and show they are ready to play.”

TVCC capitalized with a big four run fifth inning that put them in the driver’s seat over the top ranked pitcher in the nation is Kacey Freeze.

Erica Jordan opened up the inning with a single, followed by a throwing error that put Taylor Wilson on base.

Later in the inning, Andrea Sitter loaded the bases with a bunt single and Candise Wise drove in courtesy runner Alexia Martinez for a 2-1 deficit.

Taylor Wilson was able to score from second to tie the game up as the center fielder misplayed the ball hit by Sitter.

Chyna Phipps then gave TVCC the lead as she reached on an error by the second baseman scoring Sitter.

Celeste Montoya then smacked a RBI single scoring Wise for the 4-2 lead.

TVCC scored their final run in the top of the seventh inning.

TVCC starting pitcher Kim Leschber then took control of the remainder of the game allowing three base runners with one of them reaching scoring position.

Leschber went the complete game and allowed two runs on seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. She did allow a home run to Leigha Doyle in the second inning.

Wise, Jordan and Sitter each had multi-hit games for TVCC in the win.
