4/29/13 East Texas Fishing Report

ATHENS — Here is the East Texas Fishing Report for the week of April 29:

Athens — Water level is 2.37 feet low and stained. Water temp in the upper 60s, low 70s.

Bobby Spearman says crappie fishing has been good on live shiners and jigs in 5-12 feet of water along grass lines and on points. Lots of black crappie still full of eggs.

Bass fishing has been good to 11 pounds on Carolina rigs, jigs and crankbaits fished on structure in 18-20 feet.

Palestine — Water level about two inches low and clear. Water temp in the upper 60s.

Fishing guide Ricky Vandergriff says crappie fishing has been good in 13 feet of water around brush piles using minnows and jigs. Black bass still shallow, hitting spinnerbaits, cranks and split shot rig plastics. The fish are hanging tight to brush; a few fish still on beds in the backs of pockets.

Catfish are good on minnows, night crawlers and chicken livers fished on boat around brush piles and on sandy flats and boat docks in 2-7 feet. White bass are good on spoons and 'Traps worked on points.

Cedar Creek — Water level is 3.23 feet low and stained. Water temp in the upper 60s.

Fishing guide Jason Barber says bass are good in the backs of coves, hitting weightless plastics or flipping Texas rigs around shallow cover. Cranks and spinnerbaits have been effective along rock structure early in the day.

Crappie are good in 3-8 feet of water around rocks using minnows. Catfish are good   on shallow, wind blown shorelines and retaining walls using cut shad on bottom or under a cork. Hybrids and white bass are hanging on windy points, hitting slabs and Sassy Shads.

Richland Chambers — Water level us 5.49 feet low and fairly clear. Surface temp in the upper 60s, low 70s.

Joey Atnip and Fisherman's Point says bass are good with lots of fish moving shallow on beds. Plenty of sight fishing going on in the backs of creeks.

Catfish are good on prepared baits soaked on windy shorelines and in standing timber. The bigger blues and flat heads are coming on fresh shad and live perch on jug lines. Crappie are still spawning, hitting shiners under corks and on jigs in 1-3 feet of water. White bass are excellent with a few hybrids in the mix, mostly in 18-32 feet of water on the 309 Flats and around Wind Sock.

Fork — Water level is 4.46 feet low and clear. Water temp in the low 70s.

Tony Parker at the Minnow Bucket said bass anglers are struggling. Best bite coming on shaky heads fished tight to timber. Also some fish on Carolina rigs. A few post spawners beginning to hit topwaters in shallow water.

Crappie are in transition. Best bite coming around brush piles in 18-20 feet of water. Channel cat are gravitating towards the shallows, hitting night crawlers tightlined on bottom in 10-15 feet of water.

Toledo Bend — Water level is 1.62 feet low and clear. Water temp in the upper 60s, low 70s.

Fishing guide Tommy Martin says bass fishing has been good on Alabama rigs worked along 4-5 foot drop offs near deeper water. Texas rig Trick Worms are producing in the same areas. A few fish reported on frogs tossed around shallow grass, mainly early in the day.

Crappie fishing has been good on jigs strolled along outside grass edges in 13-16 feet of water. Brush piles are beginning to hold some fish as well. Catfish are excellent up north on trotline sets along the river and on stump flats 7-15 feet deep. Rod and reelers picking up good numbers of blues and channels on night crawlers and cut shad.

Sam Rayburn — Water level is 1.79 feet low and clear. Water temp in the upper 60s, low 70s.

Fishing guide Tommy Martin says there are still a few fish  on beds. Drop offs on main lake and secondary points are holding good numbers of post spawn fish in 4-15 feet. Also some bass busting frogs around shallow hay grass and lily pads.

Brushpiles in 20-25 feet of water are kicking out good numbers of crappie on jigs and shiners.
