Athens —
The Athens Hornets have gotten on a roll recently as they picked up a 2-1 win over the Mabank Panthers Tuesday night at Bruce Field on Senior Night.
The Hornets received goals from Enrique Rodriguez and Bryant Castaneda.
The Hornets are 7-11-5 overall and 3-6 in District 31-4A play with one game remaining.
AHS wraps up the regular season Friday night at Chapel Hill. The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m. following the junior varsity game at 5 p.m.
Coach Jonathan Ryal said if the Hornets win or have a shootout with Chapel Hill Friday night, they are in the playoffs.
If they lose it would go to a tiebreaker situation depending on how all of the other games go Friday night.
The Hornets currently have nine points in district, while Mabank and Chapel Hill each have six points.
Mabank wraps up the regular season hosting Whitehouse.
In women’s soccer, the Athens Lady Hornets lost a tough game to Mabank 3-1 in Mabank.
They will have senior night against Chapel Hill Friday night at Bruce Field.
BASEBALL
Bobcats improve to 3-2 in district play
CROSS ROADS — Cross Roads Coach Chris Curran’s Bobcats’ improved to 3-2 in district play with a 13-10 win over Fruitvale Tuesday night.
The Bobcats will continue a three-game home stand Friday night against the LaPoynor Flyer’s.
The varsity only contest is set for 5 p.m.
GOLF
AHS has strong showing in Quitman tournaments
QUITMAN — The Athens Hornets golf team competed at the Quitman Invitational meet on March 5.
The invitational was held at The Links at Lands End Country Club.
For the Hornets, Alec Hammac finished in fourth place overall with a 79, followed by Shane Renberg, Matt Stanley and Andrew Haggard each scoring 97 and Chris Williams with a 108.
For the Lady Hornets, Allison Kalawe led the way with a 108, followed by Brooke DeShazo with a 114, Emilli Morrison with a 119 and Marissa Gross with a 121.
The Hornets also had a chance to play at the Oakhurst/Peach Tree Country club on March 18 and had solid scores.
For the Hornets, Hammac once again led the way with an 86, followed by Renberg with a 93, Andrew Haggard with a 110, George Hutson scoring a 120 and Tyler Haggard rounding out the team with a score of 121.
On the girls side, Kalawe led the way with a 103, followed by Morrison with a 108, DeShazo with a 119 and Gross with a 121.
The varsity girls and boys teams return to the course March 25 at Lake Fork Country Club.
The teams will tee off at 8 a.m.
BASKETBALL
Sanders named to Class 3A all-region team
AHS junior Anthony Sanders was named to the all-region basketball team for the second year in a row this week.
Sanders was the leading scorer for the Hornets as the team advanced to the bi-district round of the playoffs under first year head coach Gerald Anthony.

The defending state champion Pleasant Grove Hawks swept their second straight series with a 10-0 win on Friday and a 4-1 win on Saturday. -

With the 2013 season officially in the books, the Athens Hornets had nine players named to the District 15-3A baseball team released on Monday.
