The Athens Review
Following an undefeated regular season last year at Athens High School, coach Paul Essary has released the 2014 football schedule.
Athens finished out the 2013 season with an undefeated record at 10-0 before losing in the opening round of the playoffs to the Chapel Hill Bulldogs.
The Hornets head into the season with two competitive scrimmages starting August 15.
The Hornets will travel to Fairfield for a 7 p.m. scrimmage, followed by a scrimmage at Bruce Field against Red Oak on August 21.
This season, Athens moved up in classification to the newly formed District 8-4A, Division I with Van, Mabank, Kaufman, Crandall and Wills Point.
The Hornets moved up to 4A play following the biennial realignment period after playing the last two seasons in Class 3A.
Before they hit the district season, the Hornets will open the year on August 29 with a home game against the Henderson Lions.
They will then make their first road trip of the year as they head to Diboll for Week 2 action.
Diboll made it into the playoffs last season with a 1-9 regular season.
Week 3 sees the Hornets welcome the Hallsville Bobcats to Bruce Field, before heading back out on the road to Rusk on September 19.
Athens will then wrap up the non-district portion of the schedule against the Waco Robinson Rockets for homecoming on September 26.
October 10 will begin the start of District 8-4A play as the Hornets begin a two-game road trip against the Van Vandals and Mabank Panthers.
They will then return home against the Kaufman Lions on Oct. 24 for youth football night.
The Hornets will travel to Crandall on Halloween night at 7:30 p.m.
They will then end the regular season at Bruce Field against the Wills Point Tigers for Senior Night on Nov. 7.
