3/26/14 East Texas Fishing Report

Athens — Here is the East Texas Fishing Report for the week of March 25:

ATHENS — Water level is about an inch high and clear. Water temp in the upper 50s, low 60s.

Tuffy Littlefield says bass are just beginning to move on beds. An 8.3 pounder and good numbers of slot fish reported on plastics in 3-4 feet of water.

Crappie are moving shallow, hitting jigs and shiners around shallow grass beds.

CEDAR CREEK — Water level about 3.60 feet low and stained. Water temp in the upper 50s.

Fishing guide Jason Barber says catfish are good to 10 pounds on cut shad in shallow water. Hybrids are hitting Carolina rigged shad in 2-8 feet on windy points.

Black bass are hitting cranks and 'Traps on points at the mouths of spawning coves. Spinnerbaits and plastics are working around docks. Lots of crappie in 2-4 feet around shallow cover in the backs of creeks and around marina docks, hitting jigs under a cork.

PALESTINE — Water level is about four inches high and stained up north, clear down south. Water temp in the low 60s.

Fishing guide Ricky Vandergriff says bass are fair to eight pounds on jigs, plastics and spinnerbaits worked in 2-4 feet of water up north. Good numbers also up shallow down south.

Crappie are hit or miss in shallow water; where you find them there are big numbers. The fish are in the backs of creeks and pockets water 18 inches deep or less. White bass are good up the Neches. Catfish are good on jugs, trot lines and around cormorant roosts and boat docks using liver.

RICHLAND CHAMBERS — RC is 7.29 feet low and fairly clear. Water temp is in the mid-50s.

Larry Winters at Midway Landing says bass fishing is fair to four pounds using spinnerbaits and plastics towards the backs of creeks in 2-4 feet. Lots of buck bass in the mix.

Crappie are fair in the backs of creeks, mainly late day and at night. Minnows are the top producer.

White bass slow. Best bite is on windy points in 25-28 feet of water using slabs. Catfishermen reporting good results along windy shorelines and under cormorant roosts using cut shad or punch bait.

FORK — Water level is about four feet low and clear. Water temp in the upper 50s, low 60s.

Tony Parker at Minnow Bucket Marina says bass fishing has been slow. Lots of males roaming the shallows, but the females seem to be holding back in mid-range depths. Best producers are short Carolina rigs, Chatterbaits and plastics in 2-10 feet towards the backs of creeks. A 12.10 pounder reported on a jig in 10 feet of water.

Crappie anglers are plucking limits out of 4-6 feet using shiners and jigs fished under a cork. No report on catfish. White bass are good. The fish are running shad in shallow water.

NACOGDOCHES — Water level about full pool and stained up north, clear down south. Water temp in the low 60s.

Bass to nine pounds taking Alabama rigs fished on points and plastics worked slowly across spawning flats. Good numbers of fish up shallow.

Crappie fishermen are reporting partial limits on shiners and jigs fished at shallow and medium-depths.

NACONICHE — Water level is full and clear. Water temp in the upper 50s, low 60s.

Bass are good to five pounds on plastics soaked in skinny water. Jerk baits, swim jigs and flipping jigs fished around bushes at mid-range depths also are producing some solid fish.

Crappie are good off the pier using jigs.

TOLEDO BEND — Water level is 2.90 feet low and clear. Water temp in the upper 50s, low 60s.

Bass are good to nine pounds. Russell Cecil won the Rayovac event last weekend with a three-day total of 61-9. The majority of the top finishers were sight fishing spawning bass in shallow water using plastics.

Rhonda Shivley at Bill's Landing says crappie fishing has been good in the backs of creeks around cypress trees in 4-6 feet using live shiners and jigs under a slip cork. Catfish are good to 62 pounds on trotline sets in shallow water, 4-8 feet; deep water sets are slow for quality fish. White bass still good up the Sabine.

SAM RAYBURN — Water level is 2.90 feet low and clear. Water temp in the 60s.

Ann Wilson at Ann's Tackle says bass are good on lizards, Senkos, Rat-L-Traps and frogs. Best bite is coming shallow on spawning flats and pockets. Crappie are fair on shiners and jigs, moving into spawning areas in the backs of major and secondary creeks.

White bass are still good up the Angelina on Roadrunners.

PINKSTON — Water level is 2 1/2 feet low and clear. Water temp in the 60s.

Bass are good to 11 1/2 pounds on plastics fished in 2-8 feet of water. Crappie fishermen reporting some solid catches on Roadrunners around shallow grass and brush.
