CLASS 4A BI-DISTRICT PLAYOFFS: Missed opportunities

AHS eliminated in bi-district with a 1-0 loss to Kilgore Lady Bulldogs

Lindale — The Athens Lady Hornets wrapped up the season with a 1-0 loss to the Kilgore Lady Bulldogs at Eagle Stadium in Lindale.

The Lady Hornets finished the year with a 9-10-3 record as the third seed out of District 31-4A play.

The story of the game for the Athens Lady Hornets was a chance of missed opportunities as Kilgore controlled the pace throughout.

Athens was held to only two shots on goal as Makayle Traxson recorded both shots.

AHS could not figure out how to get past an aggressive Kilgore defense as they kept the ball on the Lady Hornets side of the field.

With 9:55 remaining in the first half, Traxson had a shot from about 10 yards out that went right to Kilgore’s goalkeeper Jalyssia Hernandez.

Traxson also had the lone shot of the game in the second half.

The Lady Hornets played strong in the first half as goalie Dani Carranza was active in the net.

After a scoreless first half, Kilgore scored the lone goal of the game as Nichole Flores scored on a header off of an assist from Lanie Bennett on a corner kick with 36:53 remaining.

Athens junior goalkeeper Dani Carranza had a solid game in goal as she had 14 saves.

Kilgore dominated the shot total with a 19-2 edge on the night.

Traxson wrapped up her freshman season as the leading goal scorer with 26 goals, while freshman Kyra Robison was second in goals with 20 on the season.

Lawyer finished the year as the school’s leading assists leader.

This was the final game for seniors Olivia Negrete, Alondra Castaneda, Niomie Garcia, Monica Negrete, Gabby Lawyer, Melinda Green and Selena De Los Santos.
