The Athens Lady Hornets wrapped up the East Texas Shootout soccer tournament with a 5-2 loss to Crandall in the semifinal round on Saturday.
With the loss, coach Skip Stevens team is now 2-1-1 with a road trip to Ferris tonight. Junior varsity action is set for 5 p.m.
Against Crandall, Kyra Robison scored both of the goals for the Lady Hornets. Makayle Traxson was credited with an assist in the loss.
For Athens, Traxson recorded five goals during the three day event.
AHS opens soccer season on Thursday
The Athens Hornets open the 2014 soccer season Thursday afternoon in the Wildcat Classic Soccer Tournament at Palestine High School.
Athens will open the tournament with two games on Thursday against Jacksonville at 9:30 a.m. and Center at 3:30 p.m.
AHS returns on Friday for a 2 p.m. contest against Corsicana before wrapping up pool play against Chapel Hill Saturday morning at 8 a.m.
CR wins first district contest over Dawson
DAWSON — The Cross Roads LadyCats won their first district contest over Dawson, 54-41, Friday night.
They LadyCats are now 13-9 on the year and 1-2 in district play under first-year coach Giff Durham.
Paulette Burgess was the leading scorer against Dawson with 26 points and seven rebounds, while teammate Kelsi Lookabaugh had 12 points and six assists.
Rebecca Kramer had a solid game with six points, nine rebounds and five assists, Kourtney Hazelip added five points, Sara Spivey chipped in three points and Cynai Wilson added two points.
Coach Giff Durham said Pepper Norwood also contributed in the win.
Cross Roads will be at home tonight against Cayuga with the junior varsity set for 4 p.m.
BHS knocks off Van, 43-32, in district
BROWNSBORO — The Brownsboro Bearettes improved to 12-6 and 3-0 in district play with a 43-32 win over the Van Lady Vandals Friday night.
M.J. Alexander led the way with 12 points for Brownsboro, while Sidney Hightower added 10 points in the win.
In junior varsity action, Brownsboro won 33-17 over Van.
Brownsboro will look to gain sole possession of first place tonight as they host the No. 15 ranked Canton Eaglettes.
TVCC Lady Cards beat Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE — The No. 1 ranked Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals remain undefeated in Region XIV conference play with a 71-59 win over the Jacksonville College Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Lady Cardinals are 16-1 on the season and 5-0 in conference play. They will return to the court Wednesday night at Kilgore College at 5:30 p.m.
TVCC had four players in double figures led by Shlonte’ Allen with 19 points off the bench. Teammates Jazmine Spears and Adut Bulgak each had double-doubles as Spears finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Bulgak had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Rounding out the double figure scoring was CoCo Baker with 12 points and five rebounds.
TVCC Cardinals record win No. 17
BEEVILLE — The No. 18 ranked TVCC Cardinals improved to 17-1 on the season with a 70-62 win over Coastal Bend Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Cardinals swept the South Zone of the conference with a 7-0 record.
Octavius Ellis had another strong game for the Cardinals with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Josh Robinson chipped in 13 points and Aldonis Foote had 11 points and five rebounds off of the bench.
TVCC finished the game shooting 51.9 percent from the field in the win.
TVCC returns to the court Wednesday against No. 2 ranked Kilgore College at 7:30 p.m.
