AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Athens loses District 15-3A opener to Canton, 85-45

Athens — The Athens Lady Hornets opened up the District 15-3A season with an 85-45 loss to the Canton Eaglettes Friday night.

Athens (2-14, 0-1) found themselves in a 33-14 hole after the first quarter. Canton (16-5, 1-0) outscored Athens 20-6 in the final quarter of play.

Athens was led in scoring by Cari Aguilera with 21 points and Bryla Barker with 15 points.

AHS will look for its first district win tonight against the Van Lady Vandals.

BHS beat Mabank 48-32 in district play

BROWNSBORO — The Brownsboro Bearettes improved to 1-0 in District 15-3A play with a 48-32 win over Mabank on Friday.

M.J. Alexander led the way for the Bearettes with 12 points, while Shelbie Bagby had nine points.

For Mabank, they were led in scoring by Madison Holyfield with 10 points.

In junior varsity action, Brownsboro won 37-17, while the freshman won 34-8.

AHS soccer splits Crandall scrimmage

CRANDALL — The Athens Hornets soccer team split two scrimmage games at Crandall over the weekend.

The Hornets defeated Crandall 1-0 on a goal by Efrain Hernandez off an assist from Raul De La Fuente.

In their 2-1 loss to Spring Hill, Gerardo Vasquez had the Athens goal off an assist from Raul De La Fuente.

In the junior varsity scrimmage, Athens picked up a 2-0 win over Crandall.

Ivan Garcia and Josue Garcia scored the goals for Athens in the game. Both of the assists were credited to Orlando Vasquez.

TVCC beats Lee in double overtime

BAYTOWN — The Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals improved to 15-1 overall and 5-0 in Region XIV‚Äąconference play with a 103-102 win Saturday night.

With eight seconds left in regulation, TVCC’s Josh Robinson hit a three-pointer to force overtime.

With 1.4 seconds left in the first overtime, Aldonis Foote sank three free throws to force the second overtime.

At the buzzer in double overtime, Dedrick Basile hit a 3-pointer to win it.

TVCC is scheduled to face Blinn Wednesday night at Cardinal Gym in a 7:30 p.m. contest. They will then travel to Coastal Bend for a 2 p.m. contest on Saturday.

Lady Cards win two games at MCC

WACO — The No. 1-ranked Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals picked up two wins over the weekend at the McLennan Community College Classic.

On Friday, TVCC beat Collin County College 58-53. They returned on Saturday and picked up a 69-60 win over Temple College.

In their win over Collin County, Adut Bulgak led the way with 15 points and 15 rebounds, while Shlonte Allen had 12 points and Autummn Williams added 11 points.

In their win over Temple College, Bulgak had her second double-double of the classic with 16 points and 15 rebounds.

Jazmine Spears also had a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Williams added 11 points.

TVCC (14-1) will return to the court Wednesday night against Blinn Junior College. The game is set for 5:30 p.m.
