The Athens Review
For the second straight year, an Athens Hornet was named to the first team on the Class 3A all-state team released by the Texas Associated Press Sports Editors.
Travon Fuller put his name in some elite company as one of the best defensive players in the State of Texas on Tuesday.
“I was shocked and it made me feel good,” Fuller said. “It just came and all we wanted to do was win and it was a big shock.”
Fuller, a sophomore defensive back, was named based on his regular-season performance.
“It gives me hope for next year and the year after to get better as a player,” Fuller said. “I want to up my numbers from this season and do better next year.”
This season, Fuller recorded 48 tackles and seven interceptions. He also had 15 blocked extra points and four blocked field goals.
“I was very proud for Travon and he deserves it,” coach Paul Essary said. “When you have seven interceptions that is going to get a lot of people’s attention. Very few sophomores make that list and I am proud of him.”
Last season, the first team honor went to senior linebacker K.J. Cumby.
The Van Vandals had two players make the list in defensive lineman Brice Borgeson and offensive lineman Wyatt Santos.
The Class 3A Offensive Player of the Year was Fairfield’s senior running back Larry Rose, while defensive Player of the Year honors went to Navasota senior defensve lineman Jordan Wells.
