The Athens Lady Hornets wrapped up the non-district portion of its schedule Tuesday night with a 47-29 loss to the Neches Lady Tigers at AHS Gymnasium.
With the loss, coach Dee Evans squad is now 2-13 on the season heading into the Christmas Break.
Athens will return to the court for the start of District 15-3A season at No. 19-ranked Canton on Jan. 3 with a 6:15 p.m. varsity tip off.
Both teams struggled hitting field goals as the majority of the points came at the charity stripe.
Athens was led in scoring by senior post Cari Aguilera — who scored 17 points, nine of them coming from the charity stripe.
Aguilera was able to score 12 of her points in the second half of play. She went 10-of-11 at the free throw line in the game.
Teammate Bryla Barker finished with six points, while Seaira Walker, Leah Lawrence and Dezaray Givens each scored two points for the Lady Hornets.
In the first quarter, Neches jumped out to a 13-4 lead as McKay-Lee Chapman and Kelsee Wade were making their shots in the low post on the Athens defense.
The duo combined for six of the teams eight field goals in the first half of play.
In the second quarter, Aguilera was able to cut into a 15-4 Neches lead with an old fashioned three-point play as she rebounded a missed shot and was fouled on the play with 6:09 remaining in the half.
Following a scoring drought that lasted nearly five minutes, Allison Kalawe found Givens in the low post for the jumper to cut the lead to 24-11 with 33 seconds left in the half.
In the second half, both teams only three players score as both teams hit a combined 13 field goals. They also combined to shoot 16-of-20 at the charity stripe.
Aguilera opened the scoring in the second half on a full court layup to cut the halftime deficit to their closest deficit at 25-13 in the second half.
Leading the way for Neches was Wade with 17 points, while Chapman finished with 16 points and Kamry Kimber finished with 11 points.
