The Athens Review
The Brownsboro Bears went 2 for 2 on the opening day of their own Great East Texas Shootout.
They couldn’t have looked more impressive.
The Bears (8-2) claimed a pair of blowout victories on Thursday, beating the Kemp Yellowjackets, 63-37, and then hammering Center, 44-21. The victories propelled the Bears to the tournament semifinals at 7:15 p.m. Friday night against Friday’s winner between Bullard and Troup.
The semifinal game will be held in the Brownsboro High School gym, and the winner of that game advances to Saturday’s championship.
The Bears showed no mercy in their nightcap against the Center Roughriders, jumping out to an 11-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Roughriders went nearly 10 minutes without scoring, finally breaking the drought at the 6:16 mark of the second quarter.
Brownsboro increased its lead to 19-2 and 26-5 at halftime.
Blake Ralson led the Bears with 12 points and Will Bailey added 10.
The Bears’ opening-round game against Kemp was marked by a hot shooting start, as they drained five three-pointers in the first half.
The Yellowjackets kept the game within reach at 30-22 at halftime, but the Bears pieced together a 13-point run to push that eight-point lead to 24 by the end of the quarter.
The run started with a Taylor Beall three, and then Patrick McCarthy and Davonte Givens took turns assaulting the basket. Givens’ jumper off a stolen inbound pass gave the Bears a 49-27 lead with just under two minutes to go in the quarter.
Givens led the Bears with 15 points. Beall, who sank three three-pointers, had 14 and McCarthy finished with 13. Ralson also had three treys and finished with 11 points.
Kemp was led by Corey Watkins and Oliver Litts, who scored 11 points each.
