ATHENS —
It wasn’t that the hustling, bustling Athens Hornets that qualified for the regional tournament in each of the past two seasons didn’t show up Tuesday night.
It was just that they showed up too late.
The Hornets fell behind by double digits early and watched the Whitehouse Wildcats walk away from AHS Gym with a 79-67 win in non-district action.
Head coach Gerald Anthony’s Hornets fell to 2-2 on the season heading into action Thursday at the Van Invitational Tourna-ment. The Hornets won’t play again at home until a December 14 meeting with Crandall.
The Hornets trailed by double digits after each of the first three quarters and entered the fourth down 60-45. The Wildcats (3-2) built that lead by attacking the basket and dominating the boards — an effort which led to a number of high-percentage, putback baskets.
The Hornets finally picked up the pace in the fourth, dropping the lead to single digits for the first time since the opening quarter on one of junior guard Anthony Sanders’ four three-pointers with 6:19 left. He would later hit four straight free throws to cut the lead to five, 67-62, with 2:20 to go.
The Wildcats, however, continued to attack the basket and scored eight straight points on three layups and two free throws to close out the game.
Anthony Taylor finished with 17 for the Hornets, while Ryan Jefferson and Kynden Crist had eight each.
Patrick Mahomes led Whitehouse with 19 points.
In ninth-grade action, Whitehouse beat Athens, 50-18. The junior varsity Hornets also fell to Whitehouse, losing by a score of 49-30.
