The Athens Review
The Eustace Bulldogs and their ground-and-pound rushing attack could not get anything going against the Daingerfield Tigers in a 58-0 Region II-2A Division I bi-district playoff matchup at Herrington Stadium.
The win sends Daingerfield (8-3) to the Region II-2A area round next week. Eustace head coach Brian Herman, in his second year leading the Bulldogs, saw his team’s season end at 5-6.
A major blow for the Bulldogs coming into the contest was the loss of senior running back Tyler Folsom — who rushed for 802 yards and 11 TDs in eight games this season.
Folsom was injured in the final minutes of last week’s 28-21 loss to the Lone Oak Buffaloes, in which the Bulldogs got into the playoffs by way of a tie-breaker.
The injury bug continued to bite the Bulldogs throughout the game as running backs Jesus Barcenas and Jalen Seahorn were injured in the first half. Seahorn did return to the contest and finished with 11 carries for 62 yards in his final game of his high school career.
Daingerfield jumped out to a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter on two special teams touchdowns. The Tigers received the opening kickoff as Troy Stuard blasted his way for 71 yards 15 seconds into the game.
The Bulldogs’ best drive of the ballgame came on their second possession as they were able to drive all the way down to the Tigers’ 7-yard line. On fourth down and four, Eustace fumbled the snap — which resulted in a missed 23-yard field goal by senior kicker Kyle Purselley.
Following a two-yard run by Keris Alexander, Daingerfield’s Calvin Bryant later received a Eustace punt and was able to reverse field for a 32-yard punt return for a touchdown with 11:01 remaining in the first half. Carlos Macias nailed his third PAT good for a 21-0 lead.
Eustace running back Adam Carson had one of his best games of the season as he was asked to carry the load and finished with 22 carries for 91 yards.
The Bulldogs’ finished the game with 49-carries for 161 yards of total offense. The defense gave up a total of 258 yards to the Tigers.
