ATHENS — The Trinity Valley Community College Cardinal football team will not be involved in a bowl game in 2010, Head Coach Brad Smiley told the Athens Review this morning.
Smiley said the team was invited to play in the Valley of the Sun Bowl on December 4 in Glendale, Ariz., but declined. He said the distance the team would have had to travel was one of the major considerations in turning down the invitation.
"It really wouldn't be in the best interest of the program right now," Smiley said.
The Cardinals had been hoping to get invited to the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl on December 4 in Copperas Cove. Blinn, the defending national champion who fell to the Cardinals, 59-38, in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference semifinals, accepted an invitation to play in that game.
TVCC had been hoping it would get the Heart of Texas Bowl invite since it had beaten Blinn (the teams split two games in 2010), but Smiley noted the committee ultimately must have went with the team it found most attractive.
"We're disappointed. I know it was a tough decision," Smiley said, "but I guess with Blinn having the higher national ranking ... We can't control that now. All we can do, like I told the kids, is be the more attractive team next year."
