Athens 10U team takes down Fairfield 5-1 on Monday night

Athens — After a tough loss to the Palestine National All-Stars on Saturday night in game two of the Dixie Youth district tournament, the Athens 10U All-Stars bounced back with two solid win.

On Monday night in the district finale, Athens had a solid pitching outing from Garrett Bright for a 5-1 win at Coleman Park.

With the win, coach Billy Brewer’s team finished the tournament with a record of 3-1 with wins over Teague, Fairfield and Palestine American.

The Athens All-Stars held a 2-0 lead heading into the top of the third inning as Grant Wood put together some impressive base running in the second inning scoring on a wild pitch from Gage Lane with no runners on for the 1-0 lead.

In the third, Junior Garcia smacked an inside the park two run home run.

Isaac Garcia was on from second with two outs in the inning when Junior smacked the ball over the right fielders head to the wall for the 3-0 lead.

In the third inning, Fairfield put together their biggest threat of the game as they loaded the bases with no outs.

Athens was able to get Hunter Noland out as the Athens third baseman threw a perfect strike to River Perkins for the easy tag at home plate.

Bright was able to get the second out with a strikeout of Jake Bruckner and after a walk to Caden Fryer, Aaron Matsuke struck out to end the inning.

Athens added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to put the game out of reach.

Connor Kale made the game 4-0 as he scored on a passed ball from Lane and then Grant Wood smacked an RBI-single plating Bright for the 5-1 lead.

In the top of the fifth inning, Fairfield found a way to end the scoreless game from Bright as Noland reached base on a single, went to second on a passed ball and reached third on a wild pitch.

After an attempted pickoff attempt at third, Athens third baseman threw the ball back to Perkins but he dropped the ball as Noland was sliding in for the 5-1 deficit.

Isaac Garcia led the way for Athens going 3-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored. Wood rounded out the night 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

Bright picked up the win with a complete game three hitter and nine strikeouts.
