Lady Cards finish regular season with split over NE Texas; Region XIV tournament next week

Athens — Trinity Valley needed the final game of the regular season to set a school record with wins in a season.

And the win came in shutout fashion for Lady Cardinals pitcher Kimberly Leschber.

The Lady Cardinals lost the first game, 7-1, but bounced back in game two with a 3-0 win on sophomore day at Cain Park.

Coach Ashley Johnston’s Lady Cardinals’ are now 30-23 on the season and finished conference play with a record of 10-10.

In game one, Northeast Texas jumped on starting pitcher Kayla Cosby with three runs on three hits as Alizabeth Autrey reached on a fielder’s choice followed by a double from Jessica Garza.

Jessica Miller then smacked a bases-clearing RBI double to left field for the 2-0 lead. Jennifer Miller then brought home Jessica Miller for the 3-0 lead.

The Lady Cardinals cut into the deficit in the bottom of the third with an RBI sacrifice fly from Chyna Phipps scoring Marci Seymour.

Candise Wise led the team in game 1 at the plate going 2-for-4 with a run scored, while teammate Jazmine Hicks went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

In game 2, both teams were looking for their offense as it was a pitching duel between Leschber and Northeast Texas starter Hannah Holovach.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, TVCC found it’s offense and scored three runs on five hits.

Andrea Sitter led off the inning with a single and reached second on a stolen base.

Wise then put runners on the corners with a bunt single and Phipps drove them in with an RBI single for the 2-0 lead.

Celeste Montoya then cleared the bases with a deep single that plated Phipps from first for the 3-0 lead.

Tessa Thomas then smacked a double to left field but Montoya was tagged out on the play for the first out of the inning.

The Lady Cardinals had a chance to add to their lead in the bottom of the sixth as Shelby Reddington led the inning off with a double.

TVCC was unable to capitalize as they left runners on the corners with two outs in the inning.

Phipps led the way for the Lady Cards in the game two win as she went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Leschber had a solid outing as she went the complete game allowing only four hits and two batters. She struck out seven batters in the game.

Leschber had only one batter get past second base the entire game.
