The Athens Hornets picked up another District 15-3A win as they swept the season series over Van Friday night.
First-year coach Dallas Robertson’s Hornets’ are now 16-10 on the season and 7-0 in district play heading into their matchup with Mabank tonight at Hornet Field.
The game will be senior night for the Hornets with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m.
Mabank comes into the contest with a record of 9-15 overall and 3-4 in district play.
Van was able to jump out to the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Athens then picked up three runs in the top of the third inning as Kaleb Sifers led off the inning with a single, followed by a single from Garrett Conley.
Morgan Gimler then smacked a two RBI single and later in the inning Travis Takata was able to score for the 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Van centerfielder Matt Savis reached base on a single, stole second and scored on a throwing error by Athens for the 3-2 deficit.
Athens was able to score a run in the top of the fourth and five runs in the top of the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Jesse Taylor led off the fourth inning as he was hit by a pitch and reached second on a passed ball.
Daniel Mossberger then walked and Conley reached on an error by the centerfielder.
Later in the inning, Takata hit an RBI single scoring Taylor for a 4-2 lead.
Athens then batted through the lineup in the top of the fifth inning as Mossberger drove in Adam Stallings and Gross for a 7-2 lead.
Taylor, Mossberger and Sifers scored in the inning for the 9-2 lead.
Van scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth as Savis smacked a two RBI single scoring Jacob Tobias and Garrett Walker for the 9-4 deficit.
