Athens — The Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals will enter the National Junior College Athletic Association Women’s National Basketball Tournament next week as the No. 8 seed.
That leaves TVCC (28-5) with a first-round game against No. 9 seed Walters State Community College (Morristown, Tenn.) at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday. Walters State, the Region 7 representative, is 25-2 on the season.
All games at the women’s national tournament are played at the Bicentennial Center in Salina, Kan.
The Lady Cardinals, making their 15th trip to the national tournament, are vying for their sixth national championship. Prior to that, they won four titles in six years (1994, 1996, 1997, 1999).
Trinity Valley finished seventh at last year’s national tournament after winning three of four games.
No players, however, returned from that team.
“Nobody here has any experience when it comes to the national tournament,” TVCC Interim Head Coach Elena Lovato said. “I think that kind of helps us. We have no idea what we’re going into, so we’re just going to go up there and play.”
A win against Walters State would leave TVCC playing Thursday at 6 p.m. against the winner of the game between the No. 1 seed, Jefferson, and No. 16 Williston.
TVCC would face the Jefferson/Williston loser Thursday at noon if they lose Tuesday.
