Cayuga tops 1A football poll, Alto ranked fourth (w/poll)
DALLAS — The defending Class 5A state champions are as close as can be in The Associated Press preseason high school football poll.
Katy got the nod at No. 1 by just one point over Allen in the poll released Thursday.
Katy, which won its second straight 5A Division II title last year, received 14 first-place votes and 230 points. Allen, last year’s Division I champion, had eight first-place votes and 229 points.
Longview was the top pick in Class 4A by a comfortable margin over Lake Travis, the team it lost to in last year’s 4A Division I title game.
The other No. 1 teams are Gilmer in Class 3A, Daingerfield in 2A and Cayuga in Class 1A.
The poll is voted on by 25 media members who cover Texas high school football.
