ROUND ROCK —
The Eustace Boys cross country team competed in Round Rock Saturday in the Class 2A State Championship race. The race was five kilometers and consisted of 12 teams, the top three teams qualifying from four regions.
The guys had a head wind of about 20 mph and gusts up to 40 mph, so the elements proved to add to the challenge. It was a very close race, the boys finished with a respectable fourth place, just two points away from the third place team and the medal stand.
It was the best finish in school history. The team was lead by junior Evan Arambula, who earned Cross Country All-State honors by finishing ninth overall. He ran a 16:56 and received a medal for placing in the top 10.
Next was freshman Mark Zimmerer, who was the second place freshman in the division, placing 21st overall clocking a 17:33. Jason Ballenger and Gavin Kirkhart came in at 18:23 and 18:27, respectively producing 54th and 55th overall; Michael Yates came in at 57th and ran an 18:29; Preston Schwartz, also among the top freshman as well, placed 72nd and ran a 19:05; and Trey Russell came in 87th and ran a 19:44.
