HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL: Mabank Lady Panthers sweep Athens in volleyball action

MABANK — The Mabank Lady Panthers took care of business over the Athens Lady Hornets with a sweep Friday night at Panther Gymnasium.

Mabank won by scores of 25-19, 25-17 and 25-21 in District 15-3A volleyball action.

With the win, Mabank improved to 23-10 overall and 3-1 in district action.

Athens — who has now lost three straight matches — dropped to 9-14 overall and 1-3 in district play.

The turning point of the match came in Game 3 as Athens jumped out to an 11-4 lead with strong serving from Krystal Davis — with three aces — and teammate Mallary Rummel.

During the run, the Lady Hornets also had kills from Alexandria Gatlin, Davis and Elizabeth Hilliard.

But the Lady Panthers held their own and battled back to take their first lead at 22-21 on a kill by Madison Holyfield off of the assist from sister Meagan Holyfield.

Mabank was able to win the last six points of the game to finish out the match.

In the opening game, both teams traded the lead until Meagan Holyfield gave the Lady Panthers a lead they would not surrender at 15-10 with a strong service game.

Athens was able to cut the lead down to 15-14 as Hannah Feinsod found a opening in the defense and smacked a kill.

Game 2 had much of the same intensity as Game 1.

The duo of Davis and Cari Aguilera was able to get a block on Madison Holyfield to cut a Lady Panthers deficit to 14-11 midway through the game.

Hilliard kept the momentum in the Lady Hornets favor with back-to-back kills to trim the deficit to 16-14.

Later in the game, Lady Panthers Brii Young put the game away as she served the final six points.

She was able to close out the game with an ace for the 25-17 win.

On Friday, Mabank will wrap up the first round of district play when they travel to Brownsboro, while the Lady Hornets head to Canton for district volleyball action.

Both matches are scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
