AHS VOLLEYBALL: Nothing doing

AHS swept by state-ranked Van, looks for win against Brownsboro on Friday night

Athens — The Athens Lady Hornets dropped to 9-12 on the year and 1-1 in District 15-3A play with a three-game loss to the No. 8-ranked Van Lady Vandals Tuesday night at AHS Gymnasium.

Van swept the match with scores of 25-15, 25-12 and 25-22.

Coach Liz Ramsey’s squad will look to get back in the win column when they host the Brownsboro Bearettes Friday night at 4:30 p.m.

The Lady Hornets fell behind in game 3 by a score of 18-9 before senior Hannah Feinsod cut the deficit to 18-17 with a nice service run.

Feinsod had three aces during the run with a kill mixed in from senior Cari Aguilera.

Aguilera picked up a nice block on Van’s Hallee Carter on the opening serve of the run.

Van was able to close out the match as BriAnn Thompson blasted a kill down the middle of the court of an assist from Morgan Wilkerson.

In the opening game, both teams traded the lead as Athens had strong play at the net from Aguilera, Elizabeth Hilliard and Alexandria Gatlin.

Gatlin had a kill that tied the game at 6-6.

Later in the game, Van was able to put together a long service run as Carter served five aces to extend a 15-14 lead into a 21-15 lead.

In game 2, the Lady Vandals jumped out quick with a 10-7 lead after Aguilera smacked an ace to cut into the Lady Vandals lead.

Van then went on another long service run as Ashlin Lovett went on an 8-0 service run — that included three aces and kills by Thompson, Wilkerson and Carissa Luther.

Following Friday’s contest, the Lady Hornets will travel to Mabank and Canton next week for district volleyball.
