Athens — The Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals proved they can play with the best of them Wednesday night against the No. 6-ranked Panola Fillies.

Coach Tosha Spain’s squad improved to 13-9 overall and 2-2 in conference play with a four-game win at Cardinal Gym.

The Lady Cardinals won by scores of 25-21, 16-25, 25-23 and 25-17.

“I was proud of them because after Monday we lost to who was the No. 6 team in the nation (Tyler Junior College) but it now the No. 5 team in the nation,”  Spain said. “The girls came back and they took it the way that I tried getting them to take it.”

The Lady Cardinals will host a non-conference game tonight against Wharton College at 5:30 p.m.

They will continue the home stand next Thursday night against the No. 1 team in the nation in Blinn at 7 p.m.

Game 3 showed the fighting spirit of the Lady Cardinals against Panola after the Fillies jumped out to a 17-15 lead behind the service game of Ana Kiso — who served six straight points.

Both teams continued to battle throughout the game before TVCC forced an error from Panola to take the Game 3 win.

“Volleyball is a crazy game,” Spain said. “Iā€ˆnever got nervous or doubted the girls. At the end of the third game, we had to come back and fight back and we really worked hard on that game.”

In Game 4, the Lady Cardinals jumped out to an 18-9 lead and forced a time-out from Panola.

Lady Cards outside hitters Kaitlyn McShan and Sara Cruz later extended the lead to 22-13 on back-to-back kills to put Panola on its heels.

TVCC put the match away as  Ashlynn Caldwell smashed a kill through the heart of the Fillies defense for the Game 4 win.

“They fought harder than they have ever fought,” Spain said. “They are now seeing that they can play with the best. I am ready to see what they can do next week.”

This was the second time they have beat Panola this season.
