6/25/13 East Texas Fishing Report

Athens — Here is the East Texas Fishing Report for the week of June 25:

ATHENS — Water level is 2.67 feet low and stained. Water temp in the upper 80s.

Bobby Spearman at Lake Athens Marina says bass fishing has been excellent. Topwaters are the ticket early and late, then switching deep cranks and plastics in 18-22 feet of water.

Crappie are very slow. Lots of bass are occupying the brush piles.

CEDAR CREEK — Water temp in the high 80's, about 3.8 feet low and slightly stained.

Fishing guide Jason Barber says blue cats are good on offshore structure such as humps, long point or ridges, 10 to 30 feet deep, mainly on fresh cut shad, rough fish, shrimp and night crawlers. Channel cat are taking worms, liver and punch bait in 5-25 feet.

Largemouth are around any deeper docks, rocks, brushpiles and offshore structure in 6-18 feet, mainly on Carolina rigs, shaky heads and cranks. Topwaters are good in low light.  

Hybrids and sandies are stacked on mainlake humps. Slabs, swimbaits and live bait are good.  

Crappie ganged up in 15-22 feet of water near drop offs, taking worms and jigs equally well. Bridges are holding suspended fish in 10-24 feet, suspended at 8-15 feet.

RICHLAND CHAMBERS — RC is 6.70 feet low and fairly clear. Water temp in the mid-80s.

Larry Winters at Midway Landing says catfish are good to nine pounds in standing timber over baited holes in 18-22 feet of water, mostly on punch bait. White bass are schooling early and late on main lake points around the dam, hitting small topwaters trailed by small jigs to imitate tiny shad.

Black bass are fair in 4-6 feet of water using topwaters early, then switching to spinnerbaits and Texas rig plastics.

PALESTINE — Water level is 0.46 feet low and clear down south, stained up north. Water temp in the mid-80s.

Black bass are excellent to five pounds on medium diving cranks worked in 5-6 feet  of water on offshore secondary points near channel breaks. Carolina rigs working in the same areas. Some schooling activity early and late.

Crappie are good under bridges in 20 feet of water and on deep brush. Catfish are good on night crawlers and punch bait in four feet of water. White bass are good on spoons fished off points in 6-10 feet. Some fish reported on cranks trolled along the old 155 roadbed.

FORK — Water level is 4.64 feet low and clear. Water temp in the upper 80s.

Tony Parker at the Minnow Bucket says bass fishing has been good. Some topwater action early, then switching to Carolina rigs, deep cranks and drop shot rigs on main lake structure. Texas rigs and medium diving cranks also have been productive along channel swings.

NACOGDOCHES — Water level is 1.33 feet low and clear. Water temp in the upper 80s.

Bass are fair to five pounds on jigs and heavy Texas rigs flipped around scattered clumps of grass at the edges of the main channel. A few smaller fish hitting wacky worms around outside grass edges in shallow water.

Crappie are fair on shiners soaked around brush in 18-22 feet of water.

SAM RAYBURN — Water level is 2.47 feet low and clear. Surface temp in the upper 80s.

Fishing guide Stephen Johnston says bass are good in shallow water using frogs, 'Spooks and swim jigs around hydrilla beds and pepper grass. The deep bite is slow.

Johnston says crappie fishing has slowed down over the last week. A few fish still coming off of brush piles in 22-26 feet, suspended at 15 feet.

TOLEDO BEND — Water level is 1.87 feet low and clear. Water temp in the upper 80s.

Fishing guide Stephen Johnston says crappie fishing is hit or miss around brush piles in 25 feet of water.

The fish are suspended at 15 feet, taking shiners and jigs.

Bass fishing is excellent to nine pounds on cranks, Carolina rigs and Texas rigs worked in 12-20 feet of water.

Two 30 pound sacks weighed during the Bass-N-Bucks event last weekend. The night bite is excellent.

Catfish are good on on trotline and rod and reel. Good numbers of quality size blues taking cut bait and live perch.

Channel cat are good on night crawlers.
