The love for the game of soccer has given father and son Pedro and Edgar Carrillo a bonding experience most people don’t take part in during their lives.
They have built an indoor-outdoor soccer facility on 701 W. College Street in Athens.
They are planning to do a grand opening of Beckham soccer facility — named after his son at noon on July 6.
Pedro said the first 150-to-200 people will get a free hot dog during the event.
They plan to keep the lights on every day from 6 p.m. to 10-or-11 at night.
“I was looking for an incentive for the community so this is what I wanted to do,” Pedro Carrillo said. “We are going to do this for any age and whoever wants to come and play.”
With the closest indoor sports park being the Tyler Indoor Sports Park, Edgar Carrillo said he is hoping to bring the same type of experience to Henderson County.
“I was in Mexico and was going to play professional but I tore my ACL,” Edgar said. “We trained like this and I showed my dad and said, “What do you think?” and he was like this is pretty nice. I guess it is pretty nice being outside and seeing nature and feeling the wind blow instead of being inside.”
Edgar said as of Tuesday, they had teams committed to come play from around 200 miles away.
“I have a lot of friends in the Dallas area and they have told me that they want to come down here and play with us,” Edgar said. “I got teams from Tyler, Corsicana, Ennis and hopefully Dallas, Jacksonville, Palestine and Mabank to come down here.”
He said once they get their league going, he plans to branch out to individual training.
“Right now I am coaching U-8 and U-10 girls and U-14 and U-16 guys and all of our leagues are done,” Edgar said. “They won’t be coming back until September so we will do some one-on-one sessions and little camps out here.”
He said helping the community is his main focus.
“The main thing for this facility is to keep the kids off of the streets and away from all of the bad stuff,” Edgar said. “We want the kids to be able to play and enjoy themselves.
Edgar is a 2005 graduate of Athens High School.
