7/30/13 EAST TEXAS FISHING REPORT

Athens — Here is the East Texas Fishing Report for the week of July 30:

ATHENS — Water level is 3.18 feet low and stained. Water temp in the upper 80s, low 90s.

Bobby Spearman at Lake Athens Marina says bass fishing has been excellent along deep drops and brush piles in 18-25 feet using Carolina rigs, jigs and deep cranks.

Crappie are still very slow during the daylight hours; excellent at night using minnows and jigs in 18-25 feet. Bluegill and redear are good off the boat dock, mainly on crickets.

CEDAR CREEK — Water level is 4.88 feet low and stained. Water temp in the upper 80s, low 90s.

Fishing guide Jason Barber says hybrids, white and blues are fair on deep cranks, shad and slabs fished on main lake humps in 16-24 feet.

Crappie are fair on main lake brush piles and around bridge pilings in 12-24 feet. Live shiners and jigs are producing best.

Black bass are best on offshore ridges, brush piles and humps in 8-20 feet. Deep cranks and Carolina rigs producing the best bite. Also some fish hanging around boat docks and rock structure, but the quality is better out deep.

RICHLAND CHAMBERS — Water level is 7.81 feet low and falling. Water temp in the upper 80s. Low water levels are keeping lots of anglers off the water.

Larry Winters at Midway Landing says catifshing has been good over baited holes in standing timber 12-18 feet deep and on windy points and shorelines using punch bait and cut shad.

Black bass are slow. A few fish reported on cranks, Texas rigs and Carolina rigs on structure at mid-range depths. Crappie are fair on shiners soaked in standing timber 12-25 feet deep.

White bass schooling intermittently on points and humps early, then retreating to deeper water on points and humps.

PALESTINE — Water level is 0.66 feet low and fairly clear. Water temp in the upper 80s.

Fishing guide Ricky Vandergriff says black bass are good on square bills fished shallow on points early the day, then switching to deeper divers as the sun gets up. Carolina rigged watermelon fries are productive in the same areas. Also some fish hanging along creek intersections and breaks, hitting deep cranks.

Crappie are hitting jigs and shiners at the Highway 155 crossing and on brush piles in 20 feet. The fish are suspended at 12-15 feet. White bass are good on the Highway 155 road beds and on points, hitting 'Traps, topwaters and spoons. Catfish are excellent on night crawlers and punch bait fished over baited holes. Lots of small friers reported. Bigger fish coming on cut bait. Juglines are giving up some quality blues and flat heads to 60 pounds on live perch.

FORK — Water level is 5.08 feet low and clear. Water temp in the upper 80s, low 90s.

Tony Parker at Minnow Bucket says bass fishing has been fair early in the day around scattered grass in 4-6 feet of water. Best bite has been in 20-25 feet of water using 10XD cranks, Carolina rigs and spoons.

Crappie fishing is slow at the bridges. Best reports coming around brush in 25-30 feet of water, mainly on minnows. Catfish are good in 18-20 feet of water using punch bait and night crawlers.

NACOGDOCHES — Water level is 1.78 feet low and clear. Surface temp in the mid-to-upper 80s.

Bass are fair on soft plastics and cranks worked around scattered grass in 6-10 feet water. A few fish also reported on deep cranks and drop shots fished on main lake structure Topwaters producing a few fish early and late or beneath overcast skies.

Crappie are fair on shiners soaked around brush piles at night.
