Rodriguez sets goal scoring record with 49 goals

Athens — Another record within the Athens soccer program has been broken this season as senior Enrique “Gordo” Rodriguez is now the top scorer in school history.

Rodriguez scored four goals in the Hornet’s 5-0 win over Mabank on Tuesday night and came into last night’s game against Chapel Hill looking for more.

Rodriguez had 49 career goals — beating the previous mark of Jon David with 48 goals.

“It means a lot to me because I have been trying my best to break the record,” Rodriguez said.

Going into last night’s game, Rodriguez is currently three assists away from Jose “Pepino” Romero for second place on the assists list and six away from Angel Chairez for first with 24 assists.

Rodriguez said this is a record that he would like to get before the season ends.

“I would like to get 55 or more goals and I will try to break the assists record this season,” Rodriguez said.

Head coach Jonathan Ryal said seeing the talent level of Rodriguez has been special for him as his coach.

“It is always nice to see one your kids reach a goal. Especially with Enrique because he is not one of those kids that was on varsity his freshman year,” Ryal said. “He set the record in three years and he has talked about it since he reached the 30-goal mark.”

Ryal said this season, Rodriguez has scored all but one of the Hornets goals during district play.

Rodriguez had recorded 18 goals and four assists prior to last night’s game.

“He is one of the best goal scorers that I have seen since I have been here,” Ryal said. “I would put him with Bryant (Castaneda) and Pepino as one of the best all around players since I have been here.”

With four games remaining in the season, Rodriguez said he has been happy with the season he has had so far for the Hornets.

“It is going good so far with the team helping me out with the goal record and trying to get the assists record,” Rodriguez said.
