The Athens Lady Hornets lost a hard fought game in their season opener to the Harleton Lady Wildcats 5-3 at Harleton Saturday afternoon.
After jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Lady Hornets fell behind in the bottom half of the inning.
AHS answered back in the top of the fourth inning when junior first baseman, Sarah Red, hit a two run home run over the right field fence to put the Lady Hornets within two runs.
Coach Morgan Harpole said defensively, the Lady Hornets struggled with some first game jitters but had some solid defensive plays.
Athens playoff details set for tonight in Tyler
The Athens Hornets will open the Class 3A, Region II playoffs tonight against Gilmer at Robert E. Lee High School.
The contest is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. with the winner facing Kaufman or Pleasant Grove in the area round later this week.
Bears playoff details set for tonight at UT-Tyler
The Brownsboro Bears will open the Class 3A, Region II state basketball playoffs tonight in the bi-district round.
The Bears — who were the second place team out of 15-3A — are set to face the Chapel Hill Bulldogs at 7 p.m. at UT-Tyler’s Herrington Patriot Center.
The winner will face Wills Point or Liberty Eylau in the area round later this week.
Athens drops district game, 4-0, to Whitehouse LadyCats
The Athens Lady Hornets soccer team dropped to 5-6-3 on the season with a 4-0 loss to the Whitehouse LadyCats Friday night in Whitehouse.
With the loss, AHS is now 2-1 in District 31-4A play.
They will look to rebound tonight as they take on the Mabank Lady Panthers in Mabank.
First kick for the varsity game is set for 7 p.m.
Athens Hornets fall in overtime to Whitehouse, 3-2
The Athens Hornets dropped its third straight district contest with a 3-2 loss in overtime to the Whitehouse Wildcats.
The Hornets are now 3-10 on the season.
Enrique Rodriguez scored both goals for Athens on a free kick and a penalty kick.
AHS looks to pick up its first district win with a 7 p.m. first kick against Mabank at Bruce Field tonight.
