AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: AHS takes down Mabank, 65-49

MABANK — The No. 11-ranked Athens Hornets had a tale of two quarters in the first half to pull out win No. 23 of the year at Mabank with a 65-49 win Tuesday night.

The Hornets (6-0 in district) were outscored, 18-6, in the first quarter before turning the tide with a 24-4 second quarter.

Anthony Sanders led the Hornets in scoring with 19 points, while Courtland Lyons added 16 points and Ryan Jefferson chipped in 14 points.

Mabank (1-5 in district) was led in scoring by Austin Miller with 17 points. Parker Johannesen and Cody Thompson scored nine points each.

AHS will honor 10 seniors on Friday night as they host Mineola for senior night.

BHS in second with 61-51 win over Van

The Brownsboro Bears held on to second place in District 15-3A play with a 61-51 win over the Van Vandals on Tuesday night.

Brownsboro is now 5-1 in district play and will travel to Canton Friday night.

Both teams were tied at 25 at the half before Brownsboro outscored Van, 11-4, in the third quarter to take the lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Brownsboro was led in scoring by Will Bailey with 17 points and Quentin McKenzie with 10 points.

Mabank takes care of Athens, 61-31

The Athens Lady Hornets dropped a District 15-3A contest at Mabank, 61-31, on Tuesday night.

Mabank jumped out to a, 20-5 lead after the first quarter and held Athens to under 10 points in three of the four quarters.

Athens was led in scoring by Bryla Barker with 18 points, 16 rebounds and three steals. Senior Leah Lawrence added seven points, three rebounds and one steal.

Hadley Cain had three points and three rebounds and Allison Kalawe had two points, four rebounds and two steals.

In junior varsity action, Mabank defeated Athens by a score of 38-27.

The Lady Hornets were led by Hailey Adair with 15 points and 15 rebounds. She also had four steals in the loss.

Tiffany Boyce added eight points and two steals while Caitlin Caviness and Bree Thompson scored three points each.

AHS soccer falls to Jacksonville, 8-0

The Athens Hornets soccer team dropped to 3-7 on the season with an 8-0 loss to the Jacksonville Indians at Jacksonville Thursday night.

AHS will look to bounce back with a three-game home stand starting Friday night against Palestine at 7 p.m. Bruce Field.

TVCC sports hosting Cardinal Pride lunch

The next Cardinal Pride luncheon for TVCC is set to be held on Feb. 3 at noon at the Ole’ West Steakhouse.

The price of the lunch is $10.

The college will recognize student athletes and door prizes will be given out during the event.
