The Athens Review
The Athens Lady Hornets picked up a big 1-0 non-district win against the Jacksonville Maidens at Bruce Field on Tuesday night.
With 27 minutes left to play, Gabby Lawyer drilled a free kick past the diving goalie for the lone goal of the game.
With starting goalie Alexandria Gatlin out with an injury, head coach Skip Stevens went with Dani Carranza in goal as she was able to pick up the shut out win.
“Dani did a great job for us in her first night in the box for us,” Stevens said.
The Lady Hornets will return to the Bruce Field pitch Friday night in a varsity only contest against Kennedale at 6 p.m.
The Lady Hornets will then wrap up a three-game home stand next Tuesday night against Palestine. Junior varsity action is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. They will then wrap up non-district play with a trip to Corsicana on Feb. 3.
The Lady Hornets had chances throughout the second half to put the game out of reach as freshman Makayle Traxson broke free on multiple occasions.
Jacksonville had its best chance to score in the game with about 19 minutes left on a crossing pass but was unable to get the ball past Carranza for the early lead.
Stevens said he could tell the girls were playing a little timid in the first 40 minutes of play.
“I think they got more confidence as the game went on,” Stevens said. “We kind of had a little lull in the first half.”
He said he will focus on getting his team to work on communicating better on both ends of the field.
“I think we dominated them in the second half,” Stevens said. “We need to work on communicating a little bit more and we did a good job on our connecting passes tonight.”
In junior varsity action, the Lady Hornets lost a 2-0 contest to the Maidens.
