The Athens Review
Shelbie Bagby made sure the Brownsboro Bearettes walked out of AHS gymnasium with a first round sweep of District 15-3A play Friday night with a 47-39 win over the Athens Lady Hornets.
BHS was led in scoring by Bagby with a game high 18 points as she hit five three pointers. She nailed four three pointers in the second half.
With the win, BHS is now 19-6 overall and 5-0 in district play. They travel to Mabank tonight for district play at 6:15 p.m.
“It is big and now that they are taking four teams we are definitely almost a lock to be in it now,” BHS coach Fred Griffin said. “We want to be the district champs not just make the playoffs.”
AHS will return to the court tonight as they host No. 13 Canton at 6:15 p.m.
Athens jumped out to a 12-4 lead on Brownsboro in the opening six minutes of play.
Hadley Cain scored six points during the run for AHS as Griffin said he thought the over time win over Canton Tuesday played a factor on Friday.
“I thought they (Athens) played hard,” Griffin said. “We had that big over time win and I think we had a let down in the first half but woke up in the second half.”
AHS was led in scoring by Cari Aguilera with 11 points.
In the second half, BHS was able to extend the lead to double figures before AHS guard Leah Lawrence was fouled with four minutes left on a three-pointer.
After draining all three shots, Athens trailed 38-31 but could not get closer the remainder of the game.
