DIXIE YOUTH DISTRICT TOURNAMENT: Athens 12 and under teams pick up two wins on Sunday

Athens — The third day of the Dixie Youth Baseball District tournament saw two wins from the Athens teams as one team qualified for state.

The Athens Grey team won 10-7 over Fairfield, while the Athens Maroon team picked up their first win of the tournament with a 7-6 win over Teague in the night cap.

The Athens Maroon All-Star team — coached by Matt Lehr, Thomas Toney and Virgil Feinsod — wrapped up their tournament on Monday night against Fairfield.

The Athens Grey team — coached by David Cornelius, Dusty Godwin and Chris Kale — wrap up their district tournament tonight against Teague at 7:30 p.m. at Coleman Park.

Athens Maroon 7, Teague All-Stars 6

The Athens Maroon team jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Rylan Benge opened the inning with a single and reached third on back-to-back wild pitches.

He later scored on a passed ball for the 1-0 lead.

Following a score by T.J. Rockmore on a groundout by Bandera Barter, Preston Smith scored on a passed ball for the 3-0 lead.

Athens was able to hold on for the win in the final inning as Palestine was unable to tie the game with a runner on second and only one out.

Athens was led by Benge at the plate as he went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Teammate Josh Bateman, Eli Feinsod, Hunter Arnette and Alex Martinez each had one hit.

Athens Grey 10, Fairfield 7

Zackery Cornelius led the way for the Athens Grey team at the plate going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI in their win.

Athens scored six runs in the second inning for a 6-4 lead and held on for the win.

Athens had their first six batters reach in that inning  to help Grant Echols and Kobe Kale secure the win.

Austin McNeece, Echols, Kole Graham and Brandon Stallings had hits in the win.
