JUNIOR COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Starting it off right

No. 5 TVCC downs Panola in Reg. XIV Conference opener

ATHENS — A forfeit cost the Trinity Valley Commu-nity College Lady Cardinals their perfect season, their No. 2 national ranking and their bid for a perfect season last Saturday.

They came back with a vengeance on Wednesday.

The Lady Cardinals improved to 12-1 on the season with a 91-58 win over the Panola College Fillies in the Region XIV Conference opener for both teams.

The win came five days after the Lady Cards were forced to forfeit a game against Weatherford College because they had only four eligible players due to injuries and suspensions. TVCC had defeated Weatherford earlier in the season, and the loss dropped the Lady Cards to No. 5 in the country.

Savannah Carter led the Lady Cards with 19 points, while Adut Bulgak and Shlonte’ Allen scored 15 each. Shannon Smith added 13, and Roddricka Patton pitched in eight points and five steals.

The game was the last for the Lady Cardinals, who will be on winter break until Jan. 1.

Octavius Ellis’ desperation three-point attempt was off target at the buzzer, sending the Cardinals to a 62-60 loss to the Angelina College Roadrunners Wednesday night at Cardinal Gym.

TVCC (10-4) played its third straight conference game decided by two points.

The Cardinals trailed by as much as 11 but took a 56-55 lead with 2:20 left on Josh Gentry’s breakaway dunk off an Angelina turnover. But the Roadrunners hit two free throws and re-took the lead for good with 1:49 to go after a TVCC player was called for a technical foul. Angelina was 5 of 6 from the free throw line in the final two minutes.

Gentry and Karon Phillips led the Cardinals with 13 points each. Ellis finished with 11.

The Cards travel to Jacksonville for a 4 p.m. tip Saturday. That game will be the team’s last before winter break.
