BROWNSBORO —
Forty-six teams from across the region on Thursday will begin to battle for the girls and boys titles at the Great East Texas Shootout.
The tournament will kick off with four games at 8 a.m. Thursday. Games are held in the Brownsboro high school, junior high, intermediate and elementary school gymnasiums.
The first day of the tournament will consist of 36 games.
A handful of area teams are in the tournament, including the host Brownsboro varsity girls and boys teams. The girls tournament also includes the Athens Lady Hornets and the Martins Mill Lady Mustangs — the No. 1-ranked team in Class 1A Division I. The Lady Mustangs are the two-time defending tournament champion.
The girls bracket also includes the Kerens Lady Cats, the No. 2-ranked team in the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll.
The boys side includes the Kemp Yellowjackets. Lovejoy, the defending boys champion, is not in this year’s tournament.
Athens begins the tournament Thursday at 9:15 a.m. against Palestine Westwood. A win would advance the Lady Hornets to a 3 p.m. meeting against the winner of Thursday’s Martins Mill-All Saints winner. A loss would send the Lady Hornets to an 8 a.m. game Friday morning against Jacksonville, Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill or Snook.
