ATHENS —
The Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals begin their quest for a 12th straight conference championship Wednesday when they host Panola at 5:30 p.m.
The No. 2-ranked Lady Cards have won 20 conference championships in the last 21 years.
TVCC head coach Elena Lovato’s squad had last week off. Due to a shortage of healthy eligible players, the Lady Cardinals were forced to forfeit a game Saturday at Weatherford.
The forfeit dropped the Lady Cardinals to 11-1 on the year and halted a 47-game winning streak.
Wednesday’s game against Panola, which is 8-4 on the year, is the Lady Cardinals’ last until after the holiday break.
The Cardinals are scheduled to wrap up the first half of their schedule this week with a pair of conference games. Wednesday, they are at home against Angelina (8-4, 1-1) at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, they travel to Jacksonville (9-3, 1-1) for a 4 p.m. tipoff.
After suffering a disappointing 77-75 conference loss at home to Lamar State-PA at home last Wednesday, the Cardinals closed out the week with a pair of non-conference wins.
They defeated Texas Wesleyan JV, 91-55, Friday in Fort Worth and Saturday went to Weatherford to pick up a 56-55 decision.
The two wins improved first-year coach Kris Baumann’s squad to 10-3 on the year. They are 1-1 in conference.
Admission to the games is free with a donation of a new, unwrapped Christmas toy (for a child ages 3-12). The toys will go to the Athens Fire Department’s Toys for Tots drive.
Toys can also be picked up. Call Lucy at 903-675-6359 for more information.
