ATHENS —
The Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals know how big a conference road win can be.
So do the Lamar State-Port Arthur Seahawks.
The Seahawks moved to 8-0 on the season with a 77-75 win over the Cardinals in Region XIV Conference action Wednesday night at Cardinal Gym. Lamar State is now 2-0 in conference, beating TVCC for only the second time in six tries since 2008.
The Cardinals (8-3 overall) fell to 1-1 eight days after scoring an impressive conference-opening road win at San Jacinto.
The Cardinals trailed,64-54, with 7:31 left but cut the lead to two on a three-point play by Karon Phillips at the 6:14 mark of the second half. Phillips hit a pair of free throws with nine seconds left to trim the lead to 75-72, but Kieran Woods hit a pair of double-bonus free throws for LS-PA to seal the win with six seconds left.
Phillips led TVCC with 22 points. Carl Porter had 13 points and six rebounds, Josh Gentry had 11 points and Dominique Elliott finished with eight points and 10 rebounds.
Woods had 29 points for the Seahawks to lead all scorers.
The Cardinals return to action at 7 p.m. Saturday in Fort Worth against Texas Wesleyan JV.
