The Boys of Summer

Athens Hornets eligible team beats Rusk, 8-5, in baseball action

Athens — The boys of summer are back as players from the Athens Hornets are taking part in a select baseball tournament.

The Hornets High School Eligible summer team has played 10 games already, which qualifies them for the state tournament in Buffalo at the end of the month.

The team is a part of the Texas Teenage Baseball Association and is open to players with at least one year of eligibility remaining in high school.

The Hornets are coached by J. Quade, Michael Bynum, Rick Hirsch and Sawyer Roberson.

Athens defeated Rusk on Monday night, 8-5, at Hornet Field.

This particular group is made up of incoming juniors and seniors. They also have another group that consists of incoming freshmen and sophomores.

Athens was held without a hit for the first three innings of the game.

After allowing two runs in the top of the first inning, Athens scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Leadoff hitter Paden Quade reached base on a deep fly ball to center that was misplayed.

He then scored on their next at-bat as leadoff hitter Brandon Boyd smacked a double for their first run of the game.

Boyd came around to score later in the inning to tie the game. Jacob Knight then scored to give the Hornets their first lead of the game.

Alex Fernandez hit a deep single to right field that scored Grant Hirsch for the 4-2 lead.

Rusk was able to cut into the lead with another run in the top of the fifth inning off starting pitcher Jeremy Bateman.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Hornets added four more runs as eight batters came to the plate.

AHS led off the inning with back-to-back walks to Michael Canales and Knight.

Canales was able to steal second and third and scored on a passed ball for the 5-2 lead.

Following a single by Landon Bynum, Hirsch drove in Knight from third.

Fernandez then drove in Bynum as he hit into a sacrifice bunt.

Hirsch scored the final run of the game on a single by Esteban Chairez.

Rusk scored their final runs of the game off Chairez.

With one last chance to score in the top of the seventh, Boyd was able to shut down the Eagles with three strikeouts to end the game.

Boyd, Chairez and Bateman and Fernandez went 1-for-3 at the plate for the Hornets.

The Hornets have four more games scheduled before they reach the state tournament.
