While there were a lot of great sports moments from the past year at Athens High School, the top moment came with the school's first undefeated regular season for the first time in school history – with a 56-13 win over the Brownsboro Bears Friday night at Bruce Field on Senior Night. The Hornets can now boast of having won the school’s first undefeated district championship since 1959, when future University of Texas star Duke Carlisle ruled the hive and helped the Hornets to nine consecutive wins.
Logan Fuller breaking two football records
Athens sophomore fullback Logan Fuller broke the school's all time rushing yards mark and the touchdown mark in a season in back-to-back weeks.
With the rushing record, he broke Kenneth Sessions’ record for most rushing yards in a season with a 189-yard, 4-touchdown performance in a 55-20 win over the Mineola Yellowjackets Friday night in Mineola. Sessions’ mark of 1,293 yards, set in 1976, went down on a 14-yard Fuller run in the fourth quarter. Fuller finished the year with 1,540 yards.
During their playoff loss to Chapel Hill, Fuller ran for four touchdowns to run his season total to 25, giving him one more than Kendall Sanders’ 2010 record for most touchdowns in a single season.
