CROSS COUNTRY: One special night

EHS cross country team receives state title rings

EUSTACE — A dream became a reality for the Eustace girls’ cross country team Tuesday night when they officially received their state championship rings.

The ceremony happened following the girls varsity basketball contest at Kirk Gymnasium.

Principal Stan Sowers presented the coaches and athletes with their state rings.

The Eustace Lady Dogs cross country team won the schools first state state team title in school history back in November at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.

The team defeated Holliday by two points in the team standings with a team time of 1:04.13 in the Class 2A state title race.

The Lady Dogs team is made up of five freshmen and one sophomore in Chloe Moore.

Head Coach Josh Sypert Moore along with freshmen Skye Burns, Chanda Westbrook, Breanna Ragan, Shelby White and Alyssa Shaddox.

For White, seeing the ring had her speechless.

“It is unbelievable, White said. “This just proves that we are have to work a lot harder because we are out there now. Coach said we are going to be one of those teams that will be really amazing.”

Ragan said the team will have to work that much harder to defend their title next season.

“We are now going to be the hunted instead of the hunter,” Ragan said. We know that we have a huge target on our backs now.”

With such a young group, White said the team can not lose focus this off season.

“To know that we could win three more rings is amazing,” White said. “Nothing is guaranteed so we are going to have to work hard and continue being hungry.”
