Athens — The No. 12-ranked Athens Hornets continue to make a strong push towards a District 15-3A title with an 88-65 win over the  Brownsboro Bears Friday night.

With the win, the Hornets are now 20-1 overall and 3-0 in district play. They will host Canton tonight at AHS gymnasium around 7:30 p.m.

Brownsboro will travel to Mabank for a district contest tonight.

The Bears jumped out to an 11-2 lead as Tamrick Pace picked up the offensive rebound and putback.

“First half, we were sleep walking,” AHS coach Gerald Anthony said. “I tried to tell them that records do not mean nothing when it is a rivalry game. We had a nice talk at the half and we always have knock down drag out contest.”

In the first half of play, both teams were playing aggressive as Athens held a 36-28 lead at the break.

Senior guard Anthony Sanders had another solid game with 37 points for the Hornets, while Ryan Jefferson had a near triple double with 16 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Courtland Lyons added 15 points in the win.

BHS was led by Quentin McKenzie with 14 points, Clay McCoy with 13 points and Pace with 12 points.

Athens picked up its first lead of the game with five minutes remaining in the first half as Lyons nailed two free throws for a 23-21 lead.

The Hornets were able to outscore BHS, 13-6, the remainder of the half for a 36-28 lead.

In the second half, AHS extended the lead to double digits on multiple occasions.

BHS was able to get to within 11 points as Jared Bragdon capitalized on a jumper but missed the free throw with 4:48 remaining in the third quarter.

“Coach (Tobin) Reid was being crafty throughout the game,” Anthony said. “We had to adjust and they made us not play well tonight.”
