HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER: AHS falls to Center, 4-3

PALESTINE — The Hornets opened up Day 1 of the fourth annual Wildcat Classic with two losses against Jacksonville and Center.

In their opening game of the tournament, the Hornets lost to Jacksonville, 6-1, and wrapped up play with a 4-3 loss to the Center Roughriders. AHS returns to the pitch today against Corsicana at 2 p.m.

“I am at a loss right now,” AHS coach Jonathan Ryal said. “Right now, we are relying way too much on Enrique (Rodriguez). We are not a one man team and we need to get better on offense and defense.”

Rodriguez finished with four goals in the two games and recorded a hat trick against Center.

Rodriguez opened the AHS scoring with a blast with 19 minutes remaining off an assist from Efrain Hernandez.

After Center regained the lead on a penalty kick, they were granted another goal as AHS goalie Garrett Lawyer backed up into his own goal after picking up the save with six minutes left in the first half.

“We need to be able to grow up quick between now and the Corsicana game,” Ryal said.

Rodriguez cut the deficit to 3-2 with a penalty kick with just over a minute remaining in the first half.

He scored his third goal of the game with 33 minutes remaining on an assist from Jose Martinez to tie the game at 3-3.

CHS put the game away with 18 minutes remaining on a blast over the outstretched arms of Lawyer.

With less than 20 seconds remaining, Rodriguez had a chance to tie the game but the ball went off the top post to end the game.
